CIVIL ENGINEERING ITB (FTSL)HistoryThe Study Program was established on July 3, 1920. It is the first, and thus the oldest civil engineering school in Indonesia, and was chartered under the name of Technische Hoogeschool Bandoeng with one faculty – de Fakulteit van Technische Wetenschappen – and one department: de Afdeling der Weg en Waterbouw ( The Department of Road and Water Structures). At that time, civil engineers were in great demand by Dutch Colonial by The Dutch Colonial Government to build roads, railways and irrigation systems in the country. The Institution is now known as the Study Program of Civil Engineering of the faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, ITB.During the Japanese occupation in 1944, Technische Hoogeschool Bandoeng was changed to Bandung Kogyo Daigaku. The institution was stagnant during three and a half years of Japanese occupation, since professors were forced to join military service and students were involved in the struggles for independence. After the Proclamation of the Republic of Indonesia, the institution became the Engineering Faculty of the University of Indonesia. In 1959 the institution with all its offspring departments became Institut Teknologi Bandung (the Institute Technology of Bandung).

ITB is now the leading engineering institution in the country and a role model for engineering schools, which is widely referred for its engineering education programs by other state or private universities in Indonesia. At present, the Study Program of Civil Engineering offers Civil Engineering study programs for undergraduate, Master and Doctor degrees in five areas of specialization. Those five areas are Structural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Construction Engineering and Management. The current student body is approximately 700 undergraduate students with another 400 students undertaking graduate studies.Entering the third millennium in which a free market will be the norm and trade related aspects of intelectual property rights will be in effect, the needs for ensuring quality of civil enginering education is imminent. The graduates should be well prepared to compete in job markets beyond national scope, i.e regionally or internationally.
Failure to meet required international standards, as imposed by job qualifications, will not only cause the Study Program to loose its leadership or mislead other institutions in setting quality, but will also cause its graduates to loose job opportunities in the national job market. Therefore, it is important that the Study Progam maintains, through continuing performance improvements, its role as the leading civil engineering study programs in the country and if possible as one of the leading civil engineering school in Asia. According to the National Accreditation Body, through BAN Decree No.
001/BAN-PT/Ak-I/VIII/1998, the Study Program was awarded a A+ status with a score of greater than 600, which means that the Study Program is classified in the top category, and is allowed (as denoted by the plus) to support the development of other civil engineering schools in Indonesia.Vision and MissionCivil engineering is a grand profession-serving humankind throughout the nation. Although civil engineers are often the unsung heroes of modern development, the accomplishment of their profession in building better roads, building, bridges, dams, irrigation systems, plants and many other projects have greatly contributed to the development of society as it is known today.
